3 Reasons Why Writers Should Use Social Media


Social media is everywhere. It’s part of our daily lives, and — like it or not — that doesn’t show signs of stopping anytime soon. But does that mean writers should use social media?

Consider this. In the United States alone, a staggering 79% of internet-using adults use Facebook, and Facebook has a breath-taking 1.49 billion daily users worldwide.

One point four nine billion. Daily.

If you’re a writer looking to reach your audience, chances are you should be looking online. With dwindling print circulation and an explosion of all things digital, social media provides writers with a host of opportunities. From finding sources to reaching an international audience instantaneously, the world is at your fingertips without leaving the comfort of your living room.

If you’re a writer or an author, this means the answer to the question is a big yes. While there are some exceptions, the benefits of using social media are plentiful and definitely worth consideration.

1. Social media connects you with readers.

This one’s obvious, but it’s also one of the biggest arguments for using social media. There is a massive audience waiting to be found online. Using social media ,  it’s possible to connect with those people in a heartbeat.

One of my biggest recommendations is to find out which platform you should be using to reach your audience versus attempting to reach everyone on every platform at once.

Be honest with yourself here — ideally, yes, every human on the planet will be interested in your product, service, book, etc. Realistically? You need to identify your target market and find the best places to reach them.

2. Social media helps you establish a strong brand.

Like it or not, growing your social media presence is an easy way to help establish your brand. Thanks to social proof, having an active social media presence with a decent number of followers will help you, in turn, gain more followers and even establish a sense of credibility.

This is hugely important for writers looking to stake their claim online, as it helps generate legitimacy — or a sense of legitimacy — which is wildly important if you’re trying to attract readers, agents, or editors to your work.

3. Social media builds communities (and careers).

Look, you don’t have to be on social media. Some authors prefer the mysterious life, and that’s fine. But when it comes to building a long-term career, using social media can be absolutely vital.

Don’t think about how social media can benefit you right now. Can you hop on Twitter, tweet about your book once, and sell a thousand copies? Unless you’re JK Rowling, probably not.

If all you’re tweeting about is links to buy your book, no one is going to click buy. They’re going to click unfollow.

But you can use social media to generate more sales in the future as you continue to engage with readers, attract new followers to your brand, and build a community around you.

And this community is what matters most.

These are your superfans — or your author friends — who are going to support you in all of your endeavors, sharing your work with their audiences, and hopefully giving you rave reviews. However, it’s not about what you can take from them, it’s about what you can create together.

Ideally? That’s a place where everyone gets what they want. Readers get kickass new books to read, authors get to share the word about their projects, and we get to connect with people whose content actually provides value to our lives.

How to Create a Successful Social Media Strategy + FREE TEMPLATE

Let’s face it. These days, social media is unavoidable. Almost everyone uses it — my great aunt included (hi, Aunt Mae!) — but there’s a difference between using social media and using it well. And that difference is having a social media strategy.

I’ve spent nearly a decade learning the ins and outs of digital marketing. I’ve crafted social media strategies for small businesses, non profits, larger companies, authors, entrepreneurs, and more. And – while the platforms continue to change — some things have stayed the same.

1. You need to have a strategy.

A social media strategy is the difference between firing one hundred arrows blindfolded versus five arrows aiming straight at your target. Yes, your Instagram presence might be helping your business. Sure, the time you’re spending on Twitter could be beneficial. And, to some degree, I’m sure it is.

However, when it comes to business (or branding), your return-on-investment matters. What most people don’t realize? With social media, your biggest investment isn’t money.

It’s your time.
